BEFORE YOU START
- You'll receive an email with a signing link when your accountant sends a document
- The link is single-use and works on any device (desktop, phone, tablet)
- For some documents, you may need to verify your identity through a few questions (KBA)
STEP BY STEP
- Open the email from your accountant — click the "Sign Document" link
- Review the document carefully — read the full text, scroll through all pages
- For 8879 with KBA: answer 5 multiple-choice questions about your identity (previous addresses, vehicles registered, etc.) — must get 4 of 5 correct
- Click in the signature field — you can:
- Draw your signature with your mouse or finger
- Type your name (auto-styled in a signature font)
- Upload a saved signature image
- Add your initials and date where required
- For MFJ tax returns: your spouse signs separately after you — they get their own email link
- Click Sign and Submit
- You'll receive a copy of the signed document plus a Certificate of Completion via email
TIPS / GOOD TO KNOW
- IRS doesn't require KBA for 8879 — your accountant decides whether to require it
- Drawing on a phone works fine — use your finger
- The signed document is stored permanently in your accountant's system; you also get a copy
- The Certificate of Completion is your proof of signing (with timestamp, IP, audit trail)
TROUBLESHOOTING
- KBA failing — your records may not match public records; ask your accountant to switch to non-KBA signing or sign in person
- Signing link expired: ask your accountant to resend (links are time-bounded)
- Spouse didn't get their link: confirm the email address you provided is correct; your accountant can resend
